Hello! I am Jonathan, a PhD student at the University of Cambridge researching the modern history of China and Japan. Right now, I’m most fascinated by the Chinese students who studied in Japan between 1896 and 1950. I want to find out how they influenced (and continue to influence) how China and Japan relate to each other.
When I’m not slaving away in the library, I enjoy cycling, finding good food, coding, and exploring Chinese and Japanese culture. As a Christian, I am also at church a fair bit. I’m quite into languages, and I can speak four of them (Cantonese, Mandarin, English, and Japanese) reasonably well, while working on Korean as a fifth. During extended holidays you will likely find me enjoying my home city of Hong Kong, or exploring any part of Japan I can get to.
This website is organised for simplicity. In my blog, you will find study and productivity tips that I have accumulated during my years at Oxford, bits of research, and writings on the Christian faith. On the Faith page, you can find out more about my identity as a Christian. The rest of the site should be self explanatory, but if you have any burning questions, then contact me.
