Isaiah 46.8–11: “Remember this and stand firm, recall it to mind, you transgressors, remember the former things of old; for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose,’ calling a bird of prey from the east, the man of my counsel from a far country. I have spoken, and I will bring it to pass; I have purposed, and I will do it.”
We often think the future is uncertain, and this gets us worried. “What’s going to happen to me tomorrow?”, we ask. But if we recognise the sovereignty of God, we know that the future is far from uncertain; in fact, the future is just as certain as the past is. God declared the entirety of human history from the very beginning: nothing surprises Him, and nothing can happen that is outside his plan. All the way down to the most mundane and minute details of life.
The problem isn’t uncertainty, therefore, but unbelief. We worry about the future either because we don’t trust that God has ordered everything for our good, or we don’t believe that God has the ability to do so. Grasping for control, we tend towards assuming that God needs our help with writing the future! How foolish! Instead of letting the experienced pilot navigate us through life, we insist on taking the controls in our own inexperienced hands. How futile! God’s will is going to happen either we like it or not. We either accept it and marvel in joy at God’s love towards us, or we reject it and sulk in misery when we don’t get what we want. How sinful! Who are we to rebel and question how God has chosen to arrange things?
Let us trust in God to govern the circumstances of our lives. He who was willing to send His Son Jesus Christ to die for our sins loves us more than we can ever imagine. If we trust in Christ, everything that happens to us is for God’s glory and for our good. Let us pray for grace to trust God more, receiving that other-worldly joy and peace that He promises to those who cast their burdens upon Him.
